Cinematic Portraits of Great Artists

  • LIU Post, Lorber Hall 720 Northern Boulevard Brookville, NY, 11548 United States (map)

This course will look at great artist’s life and work portrayed in films. Some artists and the films about them discussed will include Vincent Van Gogh: “Lust For Life” (1956),
“Van Gogh” (1991), “Loving Vincent” (2017), and “At Eternities Gate” (2018), Frida Kahlo: “Frida” (2002), “Pablo Picasso: Surviving Picasso” (1996), Jean-Michel Basquiat: “Basquiat” (1996), and Johannes Vermeer: “Girl with the Pearl Earring” (2003).

In addition to these films, we will look at some of the more subtle and clever ways that directors have paid homage to great works of art in their films, such as Martin Scorsese referencing Gustav Klimt’s painting “Kiss” in his film “Shutter Island” (2010), and the many allusions to Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” in films throughout the years.
